My Best Estimate for the Size of the Virtual Goods Market in the United States

Over the past week or so, a number of people have asked me if there is any good data that one could use to estimate the size of the virtual goods market in the United States for 2008. I havenâÂÂt seen too many published estimates that make sense to me, so I thought I would start working through the exercise of coming up with an estimate of my own. For those of you who are short on time, IâÂÂll save you the need to read the entire post - my guess is that the virtual goods economy in the United Sta
What brand of gift card is best to give a teen for online purchases of music and games?

Pam H. asked: Do you know of any deals, or the best places to get a card my teen can use online to buy games on Yahoo, subscribe to sites like
puzzle pirates, or get music on Rhapsody; my local bank has a fee? And, would you do Visa, or AmEx? I am interested [...]
Predicting player figures for any online game or MMO

Now that I no longer work for a large MMO publisher, I no longer have access to all the juicy numerical goodness, research, and stats that they had on their games and everyone elseâÂÂs. A chance email recently suggesting I take a look at XfireâÂÂs gamestats led to some quick experiments that came out surprisingly well. ItâÂÂs given me a new predictor for player numbers for any MMO thatâÂÂs available in English which is sufficiently accurate that IâÂÂm going to use it going forwards. Take it or leave it :

Flash Animators Invited to New Whirled

The gang at Three Rings Design (
puzzle pirates), has launched a new web-based Flash gaming environment. News like this wouldnâÂÂt typically find itâÂÂs way to ColdHardFlash, but Whirled, which has been described as âÂÂFlash Second Life,â invites animators to upload their creations in the form of avatars and games. My pal Bill Robinson was amongst the artists who helped design what youâÂÂll see in Whirled, and he just passed along this Flash-animated video directed and animated by Brittney Lee that prom

Flash or Java - Which One Should I Use?

One of the most frequent questions I get is whether to build games in Java or Flash. It's a debate that's been going for some time. The early entrants into the casual games biz opted for Java, which overall was a better language for quality game development. Back then, Flash was pretty terrible for game development.Since then, Flash has improved significantly with the most recent version Flash 10 offering improved 3D support (whether it's any good for 3D games, you'll have to tell me, I haven'
Whirled Officially Launched; Three Rings Giving Away Buckets of Cash and Code

It was way back in April that we took a trip around Whirled, the new user-created playground from Three Rings Design. Like so many virtual worlds before it, Whirled offers players the chance to explore a quirky landscape filled with the avatars, toys, and games of their creative peers, trading a little of their cash for the ability to decorate and customize their little corner of the MMOG. Unlike their predecessors, though, Whirled is flash-based and browser-operated, cleverly removing all barr
